Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 in Long Beach, California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a girl. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nurse so that she could have an opportunity to study literature or theater. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through experience that art is a great instrument for activism. Her mother was also a social consciousness and taught DuVernay to express herself via the medium of art. DuVernay was a child together with her parents in Compton, spent each summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma would influence her later on to create a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay was in college when she started to get fascinated by the production aspect of the broadcast media. She started as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage inside the house of one on the jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the field of public relations. DuVernay was offered a job straight after college as a young publicist for a studio. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency also created a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
